- Engineering Viruses
- Is it possible to engineer viruses to perform specific tasks within a human host--that is, to create viruses that are beneficial rather than detrimental to human health? "Not only is it possible to engineer viruses to be beneficial, it is already being done." Such treatments are currently being tested for the treatment of emphysema and cystic fibrosis.

- Large-Scale Genetic Testing for Cystic Fibrosis
- Starting October, 2001, tens of thousands of Caucasian Americans began to be offered testing to see if they carry a gene mutation that causes cystic fibrosis even if no one in their family has the disease. It marks the first time gene tests are being offered to the general population in the United States. Until now, this carrier screening test has been recommended for only small groups of people who know they're at high risk for a particular inherited disease, such as an illness runs in the family.
Are we as a society ready for mainstream gene tests?

- Learning About Cystic Fibrosis (National Human Genome Research Institute)
- Cystic Fibrosis: A Single Gene Disease: Mutations in a single gene - the Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Regulator (CFTR) gene - causes CF. The gene was discovered in 1989. Since then, more than 900 mutations of this single gene have been identified. In normal cells, the CFTR protein acts as a channel that allows cells to release chloride and other ions. But in people with CF, this protein is defective and the cells do not release the chloride.

- Pseudomonas aeruginosa--genome project
- The complete sequence of the genome of P. aeruginosa strain PAO1 was determined in a collaboration among the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the University of Washington Genome Center and PathoGenesis Corporation. The largest bacterial genome sequenced to date when published, the 6.3-Mbp genome contains 5570 predicted genes on one chromosome. Genome annotation was carried out by PathoGenesis scientists and by scientists in the Pseudomonas aeruginosa Community Annotation Project (PseudoCAP). This work was published in Nature , Stover et al. 406:959-964 (2000).
